Weekly Tips & Tricks: How to Your Headshot Wardrobe

What you are wearing tells people a lot about who you are, so you want to make sure that you are wearing something that conveys the look you are going for. That can be hard to figure out, so here are two questions I want you to ask yourself to get ready for your headshot session:

1. What are these photos for? Are these commercial headshots or theatrical?

2. What do you want people to say about you? Do you want to come off as excitable, calm, funny, or serious? Whatever it is, know this beforehand and make sure to discuss these details with your photographer during your image consult session so they can help you select which clothing options match your goals.

If these photos are for commercials, then you want bright clothing that is family-friendly and comfortable. Say NO to busy patterns, logos, or big lettering. That can be distracting. Say YES to layers of clothing, like a button-up with a solid color undershirt. Not only does it add some texture and richness to your appearance, but you can always remove layers to get a quick second look. If you need some ideas for what to wear, just pay attention to what actors wear in commercials for inspiration.

If these photos are more theatrical, then you’ll want an outfit that is either neutral for a range of roles or specific for a certain type of role. If you are looking for a general all-purpose theatrical look, we suggest a neutral outfit, a dark solid color shirt with no logos or designs, will keep your face the focus. If you have a character in mind then bring an outfit that you think they would wear, for example, if you’re going out for business roles, try a jacket and tie. Remember, you don’t want to distract from your face, so choose clothing that isn't too flashy, exposes too much skin, or distracts from the look you are going to achieve. And last but not least, whatever you wear should be flattering and fits your body type. A jacket that is too large or a shirt that is too small can be distracting.

Here’s a pro-tip: You can always buy and then return clothing as long as the tags are still on.

If you want to play it safe with what to wear, bring a few options and your photographer will help you decide. And no matter what you bring, make sure it is cleaned and wrinkle-free.
